Canterbury Tiny House Society

The Canterbury Tiny House Society was a not-for-profit group of Cantabrians with a shared interest in tiny houses and the tiny house movement, established in about 2017. It held public events — social picnics, workshops, and presentations — to provide a collaborative space and hub of information for people interested in tiny houses, to advocate with policy makers for a legitimate regulatory framework, and to encourage members to build and maintain tiny houses that were safe and had minimal impact on the environment.

The Society was dissolved in 2021 due to a lack of interest in organising events. A wider community of tiny house enthusiasts continues in the Facebook group.

Legalities & Resources

In 2017/18 the Society worked closely with Christchurch City Council to produce a document covering many of the frequently asked questions regarding legislation and when consents are required — a valuable read for anyone interested in building or hosting a tiny house in Christchurch: CCC: Tiny houses – consents and licences.

In September 2018 the Society held a workshop on legislation with CCC staff, who gave an overview and answered community questions. A recording is available on YouTube.

The Society’s tiny house community lives on through Riverlution Tiny House Village — visit the homepage to find out more.
